Spanking Without Internets

Somewhere, in some big city, there’s still a few holdouts, kinky people with no internets. There must be, if this artifact of the 1980s still manages to survive:

spankarama spanking video booths

Found on Flikr.

You have just got to love “blushes in the basement.” Spankarama, baby!

Ok let me know where this is and I’ll plan my next vacation there. It Looks American, kinda like the block in Baltimore or perhaps NY? Appears a bit too sleazy for the Brits to own.

Geeeeeez… what memories that brings back. I lived in NYC for most of the ’80’s and can remember the first time I saw the old Kinematics shop on Broadway at 47th street, think. It had the same kind of window advertising. “Spanking!” “Bondage!” “Wrestling!” It was where I discovered Nu West videos for the very first time. I knew I wasn’t in Kansas anymore. They moved downtown onto 6th Avenue in the 30’s somewhere, much more discreet. The early ’80s rocked. Thanks for the blast from the past.

Where was this picture taken, BTW?

Is this really an artifact? The photo was taken on February 5th, 2007, as commented on Flickr. So, who knows where it is?

  4. E commented on February 11th, 2007:

I’m almost positive that’s Soho, London.

  5. SpankBoss commented on February 11th, 2007:

By “artifact of the 1980s” I meant the video booth business, not the photograph. As in, a 1980s business that’s still — judging by the apparent freshness of the photo — managing to survive.

  6. Dan Duffy commented on February 11th, 2007:

Yeah, that’s what I thought you meant. It still gave me a wonderful flashback. :-)

Too bad that Nu-West does not have online streaming or downloading. (Nor does Blushes, so far as I know.) Then this place could be a Starbucks.

  8. Drifter commented on February 12th, 2007:

That’s a real building? The photo makes it look like a miniature, to me. Like something you would put in a model train set.

That would be a *very* interesting model train set.

I am somewhat sure that might be the Kinematic Book Shop – the east coast mecca for SM kink before the advent of the internet. I can’t believe one of your correspondents can reminiscent of fond memories about the place. It was a filthy, smelly place of poor quality videos that stole quarters from you while your addiction compelled non-stopping feeding of quarters into the machine. A million times better to watch videos in the privacy of your home.

  10. Dan Duffy commented on February 15th, 2007:

That’s not Kinematics. My fond memories were of seeing that dang place from the outside on the street, with window advertising in big, bold letters that screamed “Spanking!” That’s when I knew I was in a whole new world. I actually hadn’t thought about the inside of that place until Dan L reminded me. This was in the day when not everyone had VCRs. I quite agree it’s much more comfy at home, and am even more grateful for the internet and sites like this one.

No, folks it was in Soho in London, England in the 1980’s. Long closed sadly.
