I find it amusing that before they beat this poor girl, they put down straw mats to protect her naked body from the flagstones. Pain they want, scratches and skin abrasion from anything but the instrument of correction? Apparently not so much:
"...the girls are prepared in the reformatory’s punishment room, naked, lying on their backs on special benches, bound with their legs spread above their heads, shamefully showing the two holes usually hidden..."
