Blake Has News

There’s large and exciting news from the spanking model, spanking provider, spanking porn producer, activist, and long-time Spanking-Blog-friend that we have known for many years as Pandora Blake. Today they announced their coming out as non-binary and genderqueer:

So where does that leave me? An androgynous twink in a womanly body; a femme boi who finds butch boring; a queer peacock struggling with self-expression. An outgoing introvert who has limited spoons for emotional labour, but loves social contact, intimacy and connection. A trans feminist who wants to disrupt the oppressive gender categories so all of us can be more free.

I’m genderqueer. I don’t fit into the male/female binary.

They are now, at least some of the time, going by Blake:

This isn’t a total break from the past. I’m not stopping being Pandora. But I am introducing a new way of interacting with me: Blake.

I am Pandora. I am also Blake. I am Pandora / Blake.

I’m looking forward to being Blake more often. When I’m performing in queer porn, shooting videos for myself or with friends, when I’m speaking at events or running workshops, I’m eager to show you my authentic self. I answer to both names, and I’d invite you to use whichever seems to fit how I’m presenting.

It’s the kind of news that’s startling at first, but upon a few moments’ reflection, makes perfect sense in light of the diversity of their recent work. I’m sure it must be terrifying, but what an adventure!

Pandora On Submission And Feminism

Pandora Blake was recently interviewed by Erika Lust on a wide variety of topics, not least of which includes the current status of the UK’s horrid Digital Economy Bill and its effect on Pandora’s Dreams Of Spanking website. (She expects to be put out of business by the adult verification costs and content restrictions, but she is “trying to find a way to survive” and “rise from the ashes like a phoenix.”)

The entire interview is worth your time, but I’m mentioning it here because Pandora gave a wonderfully simple answer that says something I’ve struggled in the past to express using many more words:

Q: Why do you think people have trouble associating feminism with submission?

A: I think it stems from the second-wave feminist ideology that has done an analysis of the oppression of women, and has developed all of these suspicions that some ways that women behave is the result of patriarchal indoctrination — particularly around sex. There’s this idea of “false consciousness”, that if a woman complies with patriarchal expectations and claims to enjoy it, she must be brainwashed and not know her own mind. It’s a really simplistic analysis that erases individual agency.

I’ve called that “really simplistic analysis” totalitarian, which tends to make second-wave feminists angry at me. If you tell a woman she doesn’t know her own mind, you’re telling her that you (or someone else, at least) knows it better than she does. From there, it’s a very short step to the place where you (or someone) is telling her what to do, because she doesn’t know her own mind. That’s more Stalinist than feminist, in any analysis that makes sense to me.

Moving On From Dreams Of Spanking

In a moving letter written as if she is addressing her Dreams Of Spanking website, Pandora Blake has just released some unhappy news about her site’s future. Fundamentally, she needs to move on from Dreams Of Spanking, for reasons that won’t surprise anyone who has been following legal developments in the UK. She says she won’t be producing further content for the site, although perhaps a bit more that has already been produced will still appear.

Apparently the site never recovered its commercial momentum after being targeted by the UK’s censors and shuttered during Pandora’s “successful” legal battles, and Pandora needs to focus on supporting herself. With a new round of UK censorship on the horizon, further investment in British porn has become an insupportable thing to be doing. As Pandora says:

The mandatory age verification in the Digital Economy Bill leaves me three choices. To maintain my current level of page views, I’d have to pay several orders of magnitude more than your turnover each day to age verify every viewer. This is obviously not possible. To avoid having to age verify non-paying viewers, I would have to completely reorganise the site – months of unpaid work – and put everything classifiable as 18 or higher behind a paywall. I’d no longer be able to use any of the preview images, trailers, or explicit promotional materials I’ve spent years making. We’d make fewer sales as a result of not being able to publically promote the scenes in the archive, unless I spent yet more time creating new PG-13 promo materials for all the old scenes. Not only would this be a colossal waste of my time, it would lose the transparency which was always one of our core missions.

The third option is to geo-block all UK site visitors – 40% of your paying customers – and suffer a corresponding loss of sales. You’re already barely covering your costs, and I’m not getting paid enough to keep updating you. None of the available options are going to improve that situation.

The conclusion is clear. It’s time for me to step away.

Sad news for all of Pandora’s fans and friends and for everyone who supported her mission. Dreams Of Spanking will be missed!

Teaching Him To Cane

Last month Pandora Blake wrote about the fun she had teaching a new gentleman to cane her:

After warming my bottom and thighs, during which I’m a good girl and hardly tell him what to do at all, he asks me what I want.

“Actually, I would fucking love a caning,” I confess, letting my breath whoosh out slowly, like the tingle that is spreading up my thighs.

He’s slapped me all over my bottom and legs, focusing even more on my legs when I whimpered about it (after establishing that the whimpering was bollocks, of course). At one point he was giving me these hard, thuddy hand strikes to the calves and thighs that felt like karate chops, and I asked “Are you doing a martial art on me?”

“Not knowingly,” he laughed, startled, “but if I am, it’s probably tai chi.”

Boy does sword form. He’ll be fine with a cane.

He’s hesitant initially, so I dive in to reassure him: “I can teach you! I’m a professional!” We get out the selection, and I’m thinking I’m going to get my thighs caned, so I pick out the two lightest. The problem is that my rattan canes fucking sting, especially when they’re used glancingly by someone who is being very careful to pull their blows. Once I establish that he’s concentrating on my bum for a bit (because I don’t want it that hard on my thighs, not today), I teach him about follow-through, and after that everything gets very warm and yummy for a bit.

His aim becomes more confident, and I warm up. I ask if he’d like to try the dragon.

“The what?”

I hand him my long purple-handled cane, watching him test it with a swordsman’s eye for balance…

Although perhaps not so much at the time of posting, they are now an item.

Legal Victory! For Dreams Of Spanking

This is excellent news: Pandora Blake’s Dreams Of Spanking website, which got shuttered by British censors in 2015, is to reopen soon after Pandora won a solid legal victory.

Here is Pandora’s press release:

FEMINIST PORN MAKER THRASHES CENSOR

Pandora Blake, award-winning activist and feminist pornographer, has won her appeal to Ofcom against ATVOD and can reinstate her site Dreams of Spanking, which was banned under the AVMS guidelines in August 2015, triggering widespread anger among free speech advocates as well as porn fans.

The controversial Audiovisual Media Services Regulations came into effect in December 2014, banning consensual sex acts from online porn including facesitting, female ejaculation, and spanking that leaves marks. Pandora Blake took part in the ‘facesitting protest’ outside Westminster, and also spoke on Newsnight and Women’s Hour challenging the sexist and regressive nature of the regulations. She believes that speaking out made her a target for censorship.

ATVOD – the Association for TV on Demand – were tasked with regulating online porn in 2010. While porn critics often focus on the ‘mainstream’ industry, ATVOD made a point of targeting independent niche and fetish porn producers, including a disproportionate number of female filmmakers. In January 2016, Ofcom shut down the quango amid rumours that it was acting beyond its remit.

Pandora Blake said, “The point of Dreams of Spanking was to make ethical porn based on my own fantasies. I’m not ashamed of being kinky and there’s no harm in adults sharing consensual BDSM films. The AVMS regulations effectively criminalised my sexuality. I was singled out because I criticised the new laws. ATVOD tried to shut me up, but they failed.”

“Now I’ve won my appeal I feel vindicated. It proves that it’s worth standing up to bullies. The war against intrusive and oppressive state censorship isn’t over, but this decision is a landmark victory for feminist porn, diversity and freedom of expression.”

Pandora said on Twitter that Dreams Of Spanking will reopen for business as soon as she gets things sorted out with her credit card processor: “Hopefully CCBill will reactivate my credit card processing soon & I can re-open the full site again!”

6/10/2016 update: It’s open!

Legal nerds among you will find the official bureaucratic bulletin here containing the details of Pandora’s victory, starting on page 20. It’s dry reading and not particularly recommended. There is a huge amount of celebratory press that’s come out today; Pandora’s twitter feed is probably the easiest place to find all of that.

It took a lot of courage (and, I do not doubt, economic sacrifice) for Pandora to fight this censorship and win. I look forward to the return of the site and especially to fresh production when that starts to happen again.
