    Is is a common phrase of the time to introduce a punishment or more often to put down any complaints about the results of own wrongdoing. .. The monkey keep a reminding finger up.
    It mean close to the german wording:
    See, that’s what happens! or Look , that is the result. “wohl” just emphasize here.

    Your idea of „coming home intoxicated“ is correct. The monkey is easy to explain. In colloquial German there exists the phrase „einen Affen haben“ translated „to have a monkey“ witch means ‚to be drunk‘.
