The vintage photography here is not clear enough (at this resolution, on my tired old laptop screen) for me to tell whether this is a genuine “stinging nettles” spanking, or whether it’s just a bit of a switching and we’ve been too hasty to strip the leaves (yet) off the fresh-cut switch:

    I love the beauty of these old photos. While I am tempted to say it is stinging nettles, logic tells me that the spanker would have something wrapped around her hand to protect herself- those suckers HURT!!!!

    I think Ronnie’s right – stingers have leaves that are more pointy. A birch with the leaves left on is an interesting idea – I’d guess the drog effect would rather blunt the impact.
