Socrates, famously, had a shrewish nag of a wife named Xantippe, with whom he dealt so mildly and respectfully that all his friends marveled at his forbearance. The burden of his shrewish wife is concretized in this fanciful illustration of Xantippe, whip in hand, riding on his back:
