As for the anal sex, Jack does speak of using a lot of cold cream, so at least he’s not describing the “dry plunge” you see so much of in badly-written porn. But, yeah, Alice would have been tense (understatement) and it shouldn’t have been that easy, I wouldn’t think. Some women do report entirely pain-free anal penetration, but they also speak of lots of foreplay, extreme relaxation, and plenty of lube. There’s also the possibility that they are processing pain as pleasure in an erotic context, and so don’t recognize the sensation as negative.

As for the Victorian stroke book writers, they were men from a culture that had close to *zero* regard for the well-being of their female sexual playthings. They didn’t much *care* whether the woman enjoyed herself, as a rule, and they were writing fantasy in any case, so the idea that they’d pretty up an anal rape isn’t that surprising. I think Jack’s phrasing “I, with very little difficulty, shoved my prick halfway up Alice’s bottom with apparently little or no pain to her” (emphasis added) is telling; he didn’t notice that she was in pain, but she was already “shrieking” and “struggling” and “wriggling” so what exactly was he basing that opinion on? Really he just didn’t care very much.

All of which is probably too much analysis for a stroke book; written porn is traditionally not much more realistic than any other kind. A hundred years from now there will be ethno-historians trying to figure out why late twentieth-century American men preferred to pull out at the last minute and jerk themselves to climax, a rare fetish in the bedroom but boringly frequent in the pornos.

That section you quote is (of course) one of my favorites from the book. But it does have an item of curiousity for me, and that is that although Alice is a virgin in her bottom-hole, she doesn’t seem to feel pain when first penetrated there — and roughly, too! That is just NOT my experience (although, pervert that I am, I very much like to have a bit of pain with my anal sex!)

Do you think the Victorians for some reason didn’t think anal sex was … ummm, difficult? Were they so fixated on the breaking of the hymen that they figured that a hole with no hymen wouldn’t have a problem? Or perhaps, since they’d been buggered at public school, and it didn’t hurt them, they figured it wouldn’t hurt a woman…? (I imagine the guys writing these stories were probably not getting any, and so made everything up….)
